About Dementia & Alzheimer's Disease

It is not uncommon to occasionally forget dates or lose items, this in itself is not a dementia symptom, and these events tend to become more common as we grow old. However, while occasional memory slippage may be a normal consequence of getting older, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is not. If memory problems interfere with one’s day-to-day activities, this may be part of dementia symptoms and it may be time to seek a doctor’s help.

It is important to understand and be vigilant for the early warning signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s and to seek a professional medical diagnosis if several dementia symptoms are noticed. Often, at the early onset of Alzheimer’s or dementia, a family member or close friend will notice a change in a person’s behavior or mood. These people should ensure that the person gets immediate medical care.

An early, accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease or other form of dementia helps patients and their families plan for the future. It gives them time to discuss care while the patient can still take part in making decisions. Early diagnosis will also offer the best chance to treat symptoms.
